AI Visibility Methodology

All About Telstar AI Visibility Methodology

Every website I build starts with a storyboard that maps the experience before a single line of code is written. I approach our AI Visibility methodology the same way. Together, we identify your business’s true story, pinpoint the frames AI engines are missing, plan what belongs in the record, and build it into the places where the engines read.

The outcome is a Story of Record: a clear, evidence-backed version of your business, built from your own material and presented in a form AI engines can find, trust, and repeat when a prospect asks about you.

Every engagement begins with a diagnostic assessment. Before anyone rewrites a page or builds new content, the method determines what is true about your business, what the AI engines currently say, and where they diverge. You cannot fix an answer you have not measured, so the method diagnoses before it prescribes. That diagnostic is the core of what Telstar does, and it is what the three services deliver at different levels of depth.

There are eight phases in our AI visibility methodology, grouped into three parts. The first five constitute the diagnostic assessment. The last three build on it when the fit and the timing are right.

  • Map the story: gather the source material, research what the AI engines say, and analyze the gaps.
  • Plan the Story of Record: turn the findings into prioritized recommendations and a roadmap.
  • Build and sustain it: put the plan into practice, then keep the record accurate as your business and the engines evolve.

The full method looks like this:

Map the Story

The diagnostic begins here, across three phases: Discovery, Research, and Analysis.

Discovery is the client interview. The true story must come from you, because you hold the details no outside analyst can invent. I am looking for the specific details that tell an AI engine your business is an authority in its field, the proof points that already exist but rarely reach a website in a form the engines can read. The kinds of information that carry the most weight for AI search visibility include:

  • Published papers, peer-reviewed research, case studies, or technical white papers demonstrate to the engines that the business holds real expertise.
  • Industry awards and professional certifications provide the engines with third-party signals that others recognize the business.
  • Press mentions and media coverage signal to the engines that credible outside sources already discuss the business.
  • The business’s history, including how long it has operated and who founded it, establishes longevity and trust.
  • The specific problems the business solves and the customers it solves them for define what it should be found for in the first place.

I ask specific questions, you talk, and we record the raw material for the story, including the proof points that belong in the record but may or may not be present.

Research is how I find out what the engines already say. Some of it is branded research: the questions people ask using your name. The more revealing part is non-branded research: the questions your buyers ask when they do not yet know you exist. Someone nearby does not search for your company; they ask an engine, “who installs inground pools near me” or “where can I get an MRI exam in Waterbury.” Those questions decide whether a new customer ever finds you. I run them through the major AI engines and record what comes back: who gets cited, what the engines claim, and where the answers drift from the truth.

Plan the Story of Record

With the gaps clear, the diagnostic moves from finding to planning, across two phases: Recommendations and Roadmap.

Recommendations are the prioritized set of changes that should be made. They are the specific frames to build, ranked by the difference each one will make in how the engines answer. The strongest recommendations come directly from the gaps the analysis found. When an engine states something about your business that is out of date or untrue, correcting it is a priority because the engine repeats it with full confidence, and an incorrect answer works against you. When the engines cannot answer a buyer’s question about you, that indicates a missing frame to build. I tie every recommendation back to what the analysis found, so the reasoning behind each one is always visible.

Roadmap is the plan for getting it done. The recommendations say what to change; the roadmap puts those changes in order and sets who owns each part. This is where the diagnostic ends: with a plan you can act on. You can take that plan and have your own team carry it out, hand it to an agency you already use, or have Telstar implement the plan. A common pattern is a hybrid one, where your team makes the fixes on your own website while Telstar develops the content that closes the gaps identified in the analysis.

Build and sustain it

The diagnostic hands you a plan. Building it is the next step, and it is where Telstar can take the work from plan to practice, across three phases: Implementation, Partnership, and Adapt. When the fit is right, we build the Story of Record and stay with it.

Implementation is the build itself. This is where the plan becomes real change in the places AI reads:

  • Our writers develop entity-rich pages and source material that clearly state what the business does, who it serves, and why it is credible.
  • We add the structured data and schema that help the engines read and trust the material.
  • We correct the outdated and inaccurate information the analysis found, at the source.
  • We build content that addresses buyers’ unanswered questions, so the engines have an answer where there was none.

Partnership is an ongoing engagement, and it is where most of the long-term value lies. These partnerships usually run on a monthly retainer and often continue for years. On a regular cadence, we review the strategy and tactics against the metrics, tie the results back through attribution, and decide what to do next based on what the data shows.

Adapt keeps the record current. AI engines have only recently become commercially available, and they change their behavior often, so what worked six months ago may not work now. My approach has shifted from ranking for keywords to answering the questions buyers ask AI engines, and from the website alone to the other places the engines read, including Reddit, LinkedIn, and sites that discuss a business. A well-defined partnership is written to be flexible rather than to do the same things month after month.

Put together, the method turns your true story into a Story of Record that the AI engines read and repeat:

Your true story Expertise & research Awards & credentials Press & mentions History & record Authoritative website content Story of Record built where AI reads AI engines repeat it ChatGPT Google AI Mode Gemini Perplexity Claude

Here is what that looks like in a live AI answer:

A real result

When your content is a source, and your brand is mentioned in the answer, the engines consider you an authority on the topic.

This is the Story of Record, working. When a business publishes authoritative content, the AI engines read it, trust it, and repeat it.

The diagnostic, at three depths

The first five phases are the diagnostic, and the three Telstar services deliver them at increasing depth. Each one is diagnostic: it finds what is true, reads what the engines say, and shows you where the gaps are. What separates them is how deep the read goes.

A Snapshot is a free, fast read: it runs your domain across four AI engines and shows you where you stand today. An Audit is a full diagnostic over about a month: four engines, up to three competitors, and a nine-section deliverable that ends in prioritized recommendations and next steps. An Intelligence program is a deep diagnostic over about two months: five engines, including a manual Claude assessment, up to nine competitors, tracking over time, and a full set of deliverables with a six-to-twelve-month implementation plan.

While the Snapshot gives you a baseline, Audit and Intelligence provide you with a plan you can act on, whether you build it in-house, engage an outside agency, or, if the fit is right, have Telstar implement it. If we implement, this is normally a long-term partnership.

Frequently asked questions

How is AI Visibility different from SEO?

SEO earns you a place in a list of links. AI Visibility earns your business a place in the answer the engine writes. The two work together: an SEO foundation makes your content readable and credible, and the method builds on it to shape how AI engines find, trust, and repeat what your business is about.geographic and industry fit, transparency about the process, and real references.

Do I have to use Telstar to make the changes?

No. The diagnostic ends with a plan you can act on, and how it gets built is up to you. Your own team can carry it out, an agency you already use can, or Telstar can. The plan is yours to keep either way.

Why start with a diagnostic instead of just making changes?

Because you cannot fix an answer you have not measured. The diagnostic finds what is true about your business, what the AI engines currently say, and where the two differ. That way the changes that follow are the ones that move the answer, rather than generic best practices.

What is a Story of Record?

It is what the method builds toward: a clear, evidence-backed version of your business, drawn from your own material, in a form AI engines can find, trust, and repeat. When the engines have that to read, they describe your business accurately instead of assembling an answer from whatever else they find.

How long does the method take?

It depends on the depth. The diagnostic runs from a couple of days for a Snapshot to about two months for an Intelligence program. Building the plan and sustaining it, when the fit is right, is an ongoing engagement rather than a one-time project.

Which AI engines does the method cover?

The major engines your buyers use: ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, and Claude. How many are covered depends on the tier, from four in a Snapshot to five in an Intelligence program.

Can you guarantee my business will be cited?

No one can guarantee what an AI engine will say on any given day. What the method does is give the engines accurate, authoritative material about your business, which is what makes them more likely to find you, trust you, and repeat you. The work improves the odds; it does not control the engine.

About the Practice

Telstar Consulting is an independent AI Visibility practice based in Connecticut. It helps businesses show up accurately and often when buyers ask AI engines for recommendations, with SEO as the foundation. That matters because more buyers now begin inside AI engines than on search results pages, and a business the engines don’t name doesn’t make the shortlist.
